Envirothon
It’s a perfect spring morning, and the early sun is just breaking
through the leaves overhead. You’re sprinting with
four team mates up a
steep, ancient footpath winding its
way up a forested
incline.
Then, as
you near the top of the climb, everyone sees it. Just ahead a flag
marks
the spot of the first challenge of the day. Arriving at the spot, you
find instructions along with a box containing various pieces of field
equipment. You gather around as one of your team mates breathlessly reads
the challenge aloud, "Identify
the
species and, using the clinometer, measure the height of the marked
tree.” This is going to be cool.
The team-sport for environmental smarts.

The Ontario Envirothon is an opportunity to take what you’ve learned
in books and in the classroom out there—under the sky, in the
forest, at the lake—and
using your smarts and your senses along with like-minded peers, interact
with nature directly.

But the Envirothon is more than a competition that tests your
team’s environmental smarts. A lot of what’s fun and interesting
about joining
an Envirothon team is the camaraderie and friendship while learning,
exploring and preparing for the big day.
As part of an Envirothon team you will:

• Participate in fun field testing competitions;
• Take part in outdoor workshops;
• Find solutions to environmental problems;
• Gain exposure to career opportunities;
• Improve the environment.

• Make you understand the interrelationships of the natural environment;
• Show you how to use field testing equipment;
